But not! For we had pledge our last cigarette just the night before. Taking off at 10am for our fantasy voyage into the Great Northwest territories, we came across the quaint little town of Goldfield, Nevada. Goldfield, NV The town had a casino and bar, which was closed, three RV parks, and a cemetery that seemed to gone on for miles. I wondered if the casino somehow manage to kill all of these people back in its Mafia days. Did the Gaming Commission shut down this casino? Hawthorne, NV Our day ended up in Hawthorne. A nice little town outside of Walker Lake. The amazing entrance to the town was dotted with munitions barracks that could be viewed as far as the eye could see. Hovering above them were two black, unmarked helicopters. We are now at the Frontier RV Park. It is basically, a graveled lot with power for approximately 50 RV'S. An elderly lady owns and runs the park. Its amazing, how this lady used her brain probably once in her life, and makes more money than I have ever dreamed of by sitting on her buttocks, and charging people $12 dollars a night for parking in her gravel. More tommorrow. April 19th, 1997 - Smith, NV Our trip from Hawthorne to Smith, Nevada was graced by the backriver town of Yerrington. The Walker River curved around houses and through the turf farms. This would be a nice town to live in. Our journey ended at the Walker River RV Park (high above the babbling Walker River). Hele Station (the combination store, bar, gambling hall and pool area) was nicely decorated. The literature Ruth and I read overstated the lush shade trees and oasis setting. We are parked in the desert with no shade. April 21st, 1997 - Lake Tahoe Leaving Walker River at 7am, we entered Gardenerville. Twice directions from the locals led us to the same Closed Entrance to South Lake Tahoe. By noon, Ruth and I decided to go through Carson City to Interstate 80, bypassing South Lake Tahoe. On the way, we noticed another entrance to Tahoe and took it. The views climbing the mountain were exhilarating. We were literally in the clouds overlooking Gardenerville. The winding roads finally brought us to South Tahoe. Lake Tahoe is literally a lake in the sky. The town had the Caesars Palace, Harrahs and Embassy hotel casinos but resembled nothing Las Vegas has to offer. Ski resort entrances lined the highway. Lake Tahoe was blueish green and vast. This has to be one of the worlds most beautiful areas. Placerville, Ca After leaving Lake Tahoe, our trip took us by the South Fork River on the scenic route between Auburn and Placerville. The river was dotted with rustic cabins along the it's banks (many of which were devastated by floods of January 1997). This two lane route was quite beautiful, tree limbs met over the road to form a tunnel-like affect. We were surprised to see Japanese tour groups stopped along the way. Sycamore Ranch This leg of our trip brought us to the Sycamore Ranch Resort. This place is the exact setting we were counting on during our trip. Tall sycamore trees, abundant life, all along the Yuba River. The dry creek (which would be a river in Nevada) is just twenty feet outside of our door. Everything here is GREEN!!! I know now, I will never return to Nevada to live. Nature is just toooooo beautiful. |
