I made the change because I may get an IPhone.
The IPhone uses a Safari internet browser, and it admittedly has a few bugs.
Probably the first one most of us will notice is its menu listing for "Safari Home Pae". They didn't key in "Page" right. Well, my site looks great on the IPhone, except you can't log on, and the drop down menu goes UNDER the first frame. Thats just weird, but its easy to handle, coding wise.
Actually, I like the menu much better now. I like the Sign In screen better too!

Becky's mom is still loving us.
We talk to her almost daily.

My Mom, on the other hand,
passed away December 12, 1994.
Not a single day goes by that I don't remember all the love she shared with me.
There will never be anyone else like my mom. As long as I keep her in my heart, she will never die. I'd like to think I was her greatest accomplishment.

We have their smiles.
We share their memories.

And if our life is equal to the sum of our memories, then we can make them live on, just by remembering how beautiful they would be, if they were here, with us.

I've got decent health insurance now for $320 a month, and its not group insurance.
I think thats really incredible.
Its Blue Cross / Blue Shield.
I was paying $620 a month in Nevada, for worse coverage.
I think it was something like $20,000 out of pocket. It stunk. I had to drop it.
If I remember right, in Nevada, the State Health/Insurance Commission says they don't have to have a general group for independant coverage. I'd have to have two people on my payroll to qualify for my own group health plan.
I got declined by them in Nevada as an independant.

I just assumed, the volts were added up for each leg that came in. EG: 240v = 0v, 120v, 120v.
I'd think if you measured one leg of the 240v with the other, it could come up a wiggly 0 volts.
But thats just what I'd think. I'd never know until I tested it, and I've never tested it.
But just one question, do AC meters measure 3 phase voltages correctly across two hot legs.
You're my AC guru!!!  Wouldn't you just love to have an oscilloscope these days.

I was looking at a tree while on a break.
There's really not much to do outside, but study the trees.
I got to wondering, how did this tree come to have thorns?
Naturally, the tree wants to protect its fruit from animals, but how did it come up with the thorn idea?
I asked this question, because, after all, I'm Jim.
I got to thinking about how the tree, over millions of years, must have developed all kinds of things to protect itself better.
Ears, hands, and legs are out because plants don't tend to grow animal parts well (eg: muscles). The image is funny, though.
So, that leaves things that the plant can build, like shapes and chemicals.
That could result in lots of leaves, thorns, poisons, razor sharp bark, and smell.
I can't think of any other way for the tree to protect itself, other than just having nothing animals want.
I also noticed these trees had swarms of tiny white bugs
They come come out every now and then, and they cover the tree, making the shady side white!
Most people suggested that the bugs were nasty. I'd heard reactions like: Ewwee! Someone should spray them.
But there were probably over 10,000 of these little life forms, crawling around on the tree.
Each of them probably regard their life as important as we do ours. I thought they were beautiful.
I kind of thought these bugs were necessary for the tree somehow.
What I saw was, these bugs coming out of the roots, cleaning up the bark, and dying.
I couldn't help but wonder how long that friendship, between the insects and the trees, took to foster.
In the end, it made me wonder what function we serve in nature.
What do we clean up or protect?
Was our species designed to escape this planet and spread life throughout the universe?
Or are we here just to devour all of the tasty animals, decreasing their populations?
All this from a thorny tree with bugs on it.
Guess I was bored. lol.

Down on Taylorsville Road near the airport. They don't seem to show up on any maps, but the restaurant was supposed to have been founded in the 1880's.
The menu's have a picture of every manager thats worked there since the beginning.
I had their oyster roll, clam chowder, crab rangoon and fried green tomatoes.
Becky had their spaghetti (which was GREAT).
Their fried green tomatoes were only okay. So far, I haven't found fried green tomatoes here that are as good as what I have eaten before. That seems kind of kookie! The tomatoes just aren't tart like they should be.
So I'm on a quest for the WORLDS BEST FRIED TOMATOES!
Talked to Ida, Allen and Sonny last night.
Allen said we should check out Wiley's park in the Appalachians.
Becky was chatting with Renee, and Gma most of the same time.
I think she sent Becky a bunch of pictures on her cell phone.

On Friday, I lit the candle on one end.
On Saturday, I lit the candle on the other end.
I woke up at 5 am with a terrible leg cramp.
Oooo....I hate those.
Today, we were planning on going to Rod's church, then we were going to head off to Mammoth Cave for hiking.
I'm all burned out.
So, I guess its going to a day of limping around the area.
Maybe I can get Becky to nurse me back to health...lol

Somewhere along the way, I decided to stick with 120vac/240vac, because its more symmetrical.
I've been confused on the 220/240 voltages for decades.
I've heard people say they have 220v coming into the house, and 120v at the outlets.
To me, that never made any sense. It has to be 240v coming into the house or 110v at the outlets.
Because at our house, 2 legs of 120 volts (phase shifted) come into the house. One leg goes to the lights, the other leg goes to the outlets. The 240 volts for the Air Conditioner and the clothes dryer is bridged in between the two 120 volt lines.
Logically, the power coming into the house has to be called 240 volts, because it comes from 2 x 120 volt lines.
BTW - It would be insane to wire a wall outlet with the leg thats used for the lights. It would be phase shifted from the other wall outlets, and that could be very bad. The house has basically two, parallel circuits that are out of phase.
I just learned that the 420v, 440v and 480v are different.
I wasn't aware of that. I think now, I'm more confused than ever about the whole thing.
I suppose it might not have made much difference to me when I was working with Air Conditioning. I always trusted the installer to get that part right. We always changed out bad parts.

This girl modelled for us.
The lines were very quick.
When its hot like it has been, the people leave when the water park closes.
The water park closes at 8 PM, but Six Flags stays open until 10 PM.
Waiting in the lines took 10 minutes...tops!

Really jerky.

 

We went to St Rita's Catholic Church dinner/festival.
It was very different from any other church dinner I'd ever gone too.
We walked into the gym, where the food was being served, and the girl asked us for our tickets. So we walked back outside the door, to buy tickets. Then we walked back in, and go two plates, each with two pieces of chicken. We sat down, and our waitress (a cute 12 year old girl) asked us "What we'd y'all like to drink'. We asked, "What to you have? She said, "Tea and water". lol. But the food was really delicious. Coleslaw, cucumbers, green beans, tomatoes and corn were all waiting for us in bowls, where we sat. I tipped a waiter my ice cream ticket and the girl a dollar. I guess that was okay to do...hmmm.
The highway was all backed up coming in.
Police were motioning the traffic from the highway into the Church's parking lot.
However, the policeman at the lot told us it was full.
There were quite a few of us in the lot, trying desperately to turn around. It was packed.
I thought that was funny!
We ended up parking at a nearby shopping center.
One of the things I'll never understand about the south is Sweet Tea
Its tea with sugar in it. Thats it. Its nothing special. Almost everyplace I've seen here sells it separate from tea.
And if a place only serves tea, and not sweet tea, customers always gripe!
Whats that all about?

We went to the Bats ballgame.
The Bats won. They always seem to win when we're there.
We decided to go swimming afterwards, so we swung by the towers to pick up our swim wear.
The elevator action looks a lot wilder than it was.
I was just playing with the camera. I love its 'infinity mirror' effect.
Rods pool was the perfect temperature.
We ordered Philly Steak Pizza from Domino's and it came out much better than the ones we've had in Vegas.
I think the dough is better here.
It was late, and spending the night seemed like a good thing to do.
I woke up at 10 am Saturday, thinking it was 6 am. I've never slept in a basement before.
They've got it fixed up very nicely.

I was born March 31st, 1956, in Paducah, Kentucky, on what was most likely the most important day of my life.
I can't recall those times, my brain wasn't quite all working yet, it still isn't, but I'm sure I was a heck of a smiler.
Since then, life has had its ups and downs.
I've been alive for 19,000 days, and probably the worst one was when my Mom past away.
As far as the ups, well, most of the days have been pretty special for some reason or the other.
I guess if I had to pick one, I just wouldn't be able too.
Because, if you think like I do, the lowest you can go in life is death,
and if you believe there's more coming after the curtains fall, then even that ain't bad.
About the worst thing I could ever blame myself for, is for was waisting time feeling bad about my life.
All those times, I could have just walked out the door, smelled a flower, watched a cloud float by, or listened to the birds sing their songs.
What I'm trying to say is, every day of living is good, unless you decide it isn't.
So go out and seize the day.
Get a pedicure, go sky diving, explore your neighborhood...do something each day, that you've never done before.
There isn't much time left, and you've got nothing to lose.

Some day, 4 billion years from now our Milky Way is going to be smashed into by the Andromeda galaxy.
The planets from our solar system (EG: Mars, Jupiter...) may become part of another solar system.
It was interesting to learn that it takes our solar system 250,000,000 years to orbit the Milky Way.
These things interest me, because I was reading about global warming.
It seems that every 150,000 years the Earth's temperature cycles between near ice age temperatures and global warming.
They can tell by studying the Earth at the poles.
Core samples, taken from different levels of the ice, tell the secrets about the Earth's atmosphere over time.
We are in the warming cycle right now.
The Earth is going to get hotter, regardless of the greenhouse gases, because history shows thats just what it does.
But don't buy a beach house in Greenland yet.
It may take another 50,000 years for the United States to fall below sea level, again.

Cracker Barrel has home-style vittles at very reasonable prices.
Its not your typical restaurant. They've got personality up the wazoo!
I tried their sampler, which is chicken dumplings, ham steak and meat loaf.
Becky had their roast beef. We each got 3 sides, fried okra, broccoli casserole,
corn, string beans, brussel sprouts, and mashed potatoes. Along with the rasperry
sweet tea, the bill came up to $22. We really liked the atmosphere of the restaurant. Its an old timers delite.
You pay at the store's cashier in front, and I found it hard to walk through the store without buying something.
I picked up a really cool harmonica for $5, some cherry pie filling (for grilled toast), and some apple twizzlers.
Like the sign says, it gives the impression of an old country store.
The only thing that was missing was Marshal Dillon and Miss Kitty walking in. They sold Gun Smoke DVDs there too.

And put in an application for a parking lot attendant.
Who would ever guess, they'd give a MATH test.
And why?
It could be, that sitting in somewhere in a parking lot booth,
there's an 'idiot savant; calculating the size of the universe?
They asked her questions like:
"If a person parks at 10:32 am, and leaves at 2:17 pm the next day, how many minutes did they park".
Anyway, she's terrible at math, and I don't think anyone is good subtracting time.
They didn't even her an interview.
But she passed her background test, rode the transit system, knows the town better, and her spirits are high.
We were both in the dumps, so we hit the road to Cincinnati!
On the way back, we stopped by General Butler State Park.
They offer cabins in the mountains, next to a lake. They have mini golf, a pool, and daily hikes/activities for their guest. Tommorrows activity is a hike using a tobacco stick...hmmm.
We saw two fawns, and a racoon.

The drive to Cincinnati on I70 is hilly and scenic. It takes over an hour to get there, but it feels like 20 minutes.

Cincinnati just pops up over a hill.
The downtown area looks like its probably twice the size of downtown Louisville.

The buildings have a unique styles.
Most of the buildings look like apartments, or condos. A lot of the shops have upstairs lofts, where the owners probably live.

The impression I got of this place,
was, its where you could get lost forever, along with a million other people.
People used the streets like they might a sidewalk, not even watching for traffic.

The bridges and stadiums are awesome.
I couldn't quite get a good picture of the bridges, but theres five of them in a row, with different styles and colors.

We came on a Reds game night.
The riverfront was swamped with Reds fans.

I just wanted to tell you, you are my very special angel.
I love you with all of my heart.
These times may seem great to some, but they've been rough on us.
We don't know where we are going to be in four months.
We can't settle in, or make any long term plans.
Its feels odd to me, not being in full control.
Our horses are running full bore, and we've lost the reigns.
From what I can make of it, there's nothing I can do at work to change my fate. The best option we can choose, while I'm working, is to save all of the money we can and hope for the best. We don't want to settle in Vegas, and we don't know if we can settle here. It all seems like a mess, but everything will work out just fine. It always does.
Trust me, trust life, and trust your instincts.
This may be the most interesting time of our lives.
If you feel you're ready, finding a Monday through Friday job on day shift might go a long way. You could save everything you make, and thats a really good thing. If you don't want to, thats fine too. Whatever you decide, I'm behind you all the way.

I slept in most of the weekend.
We rearranged the furniture, so now we're actually sleeping in the bedroom.
I hung some blackout blinds so we can use the projector in the living room any time of the day.

I know what you mean there.
I woke this morning and looked at the clock and said "DANG IT. IT'S 11 O'CLOCK".
Its nice to sleep in and watch the cows fly by, isn't it.

Its a, ahem, unique arrangement. We are in apartment limbo.
We can't buy too much furniture, but we need to be comfortable.
I was told Friday that a full time position wasn't going to be created.
Thats good, because nobody ever made me an offer, and I'm still getting settled in anyway.
They were concerned that I might have taken it the wrong way.
I'm not sure what exactly goes on where I work.
I know they have a lot of meetings, and I know some of them are about me.
I can only guess whats been said by studying the behaviour of the people who attend the meetings.
It almost feels creepy. lol.
All I can do is give them my best effort, try not to make any waves, and see what happens.
Anyway, getting back to the apartment
If my contract runs out in November, we're going to have to move again.
Which means, we shouldn't buy furniture.

Another visitor has arrived.
Her name is McKenzie Jackson.
She's almost 9 pounds, the daughter of Renee Spurling and Jonathan Jackson.
She's Becky's grandaughter, and Ruth Czachorwski's great grand daughter.
And she's beautiful.
One wonders what will she see in her lifetime.
What beautiful things will come her way?
And soon, after we're all laid to rest, she will have her first grand daughter,
and she too, will be beautiful.
And she will come into a world so wonderful, we can't even imagine it.

At the beginning of August it will rise in the east at 10p.m. and reach its azimuth at about 3 a.m. By the end of August when the two planets are closest, Mars will rise at nightfall and reach its highest point in the sky at 12:30am. That's pretty convenient to see something that no human being has seen in recorded history. So, mark your calendar at the beginning of August to see Mars grow progressively brighter and brighter throughout the month.

We got a call this morning on our new phone around 1:30 am last night.
I'm not used to this new phone.
When someone calls, it announces their caller id, in a voice that sounds like the FBI is giving you their last warning to come out with you hands in the air. Anyway, that fit with my dreams, because I had just ordered some inhalers from India. They're illegal drugs, because I can't afford a doctor or American labeled drugs, and I don't have a prescription. I put the wrong apartment number on the order. To a straight laced guy like me, thats horrifying. Thats all that I do that's illegal.
ANYWAY, back to the phone call.
Renee and Becky were on the phone most of last night, talking about all kinds of things a guy shouldn't know.
I didn't hear both sides of the conversation, but I heard Becky talking about the color of Renee's fluids (pink or clear) and I knew it was personal. Then I heard Becky yelling "GO TO THE DOCTOR NOW! GO! GO! GO!".
So, I went...to the Sealbach Bar downstairs to try a Mint Julep.
Those phone conversations have been happening almost nightly, and all I can do is stare at the big screen TV with the sound off, so why not have some fun. Sealbach's Mint Juleps ($9.60) are actually quite good. Becky joined me about a half hour later, then we went to an antique car show on Fourth Street. We stopped by TGIF's and babbled with Jeff, the waiter.
Later, we came back, nestled into bed, watched Rambo, then nodded away.
At 1:30 am we got the call,
Renee was in observation.
I'd just have to assume she popped one out in the middle of the night.
Becky said, with glowing eyes, "She's at 5 centimeters".
I still don't know what that measures, because I'm an inch guy, and I'm not sure I even want to know.
But Becky said "At 10 centimeters, she's ready to give birth".
Its just another sleepless night here in Louisville for us.
Another sleepless night.

Lynne's Café on Baxter Road
Here, you get fresh veggies, unique entrées and extremely friendly service. A waitress here sat down at our table and told us that the locals read 'The Leo' to find all of the happenings around Louisville. Its amazing, the number of name bands who just slide in and out of this place! Counting Crows is playing just 5 blocks away next week.


I really don't get why anyone would pour beer from a pitcher into a coffee cup.
Thats just disgusting. But another sign said that management isn't responsible for items left in the coat room, and there is no coat room. So, thats it, they're crazy, and they're lots of fun!
Lynnes Cafe is hosting an ugly lamp contest. The person that wins the lamp contest gets free breakfast for a year.

Bardstown Road is the place to go in Louisville.
Louisville is all about small businesses. They're motto is 'Keep Louisville Weird'.
They like the chains here, but the push is to keep the Mom and Pop stores open.
I just think thats GREAT!
 
Bardstown Road Houses
Musicians and other talented people live in houses along the road. Most of these old homes are residential, but also host some kind of business. I think I'd like living in one of these, and maybe have a Tarot Card reading / Web Site building combo in my living room. A customer would enter, I'd go through some a beaded curtains and ask them, "What would you like today? Would you like a website built, would you like to know your future, my sweetheart also does manicures, if you'd like that.". That would be cool.

Rod BBQ'd corn in the husk, garlic potatoes, T-Bone steaks and um, his trash!
The corn was especially delicious cooked that way.

Rod and Jessica swung by after they got out of church this morning.

The zoo was nice, but it was a lot of walking. Thats why you don't see my picture in here.
I think I melted somewhere along the way. At $11 a ticket, its one of the best deals in Louisville.
We left the zoo, drove around for an hour, then went to a Bats baseball game.

If we went yesterday, we could have seen Herman's Hermits!
I heard they got captured, and were put on exhibit.
They were singing their number one hits, like:
"Mrs Brown you've got a lovely Orangutan"
"Something tells me I FELL into something good"
"Silhouettes on the Cage"
"There's a kind of a hush, all over the Zoo"
And last but not least: "I'm Henry the Ape, I am"
To those of you who didn't blow out a candle when the light bulb was invented,

Life back then was all about Peace, Love, Go Go Boots and Mini Skirts!

Finally, after all these years, I've got some new glasses. one set for reading, the other for driving.
I rarely need them, but when I do, I REALLY need them.
Becky got a new pair too. Her new pair is practically indestructable!
We both left the optometrist with dilated pupils.
So, we were both nearly blind, seeing rainbows around everything.
Driving home was a real challenge.
I didn't learn what I needed too though.
I wanted to learn what might make someone's eyesight fluctuate between fuzzy and good over a couple of days.
All the optometrist said was, try some Refresh Plus Eye Drops, and maybe take some Omega-3.
